Spearfish-Northern Black Hills Rotary welcomes Dr. Leon Biggs, Assessment & Field Placement Coordinator at Black Hills State University College of Education and Behavior Sciences, School of Education.
Leon's Rotary application says he has managerial and leadership skills and is not afraid of any type of physical labor. He would like to contribute in whatever capacity is needed in order to help Rotary assist the community's needs.
Dr. Leon Biggs was born and raised in rural Arkansas where he enjoyed being a kid and playing several high school sports. After changing his major from landscape architecture to education he received his undergraduate degree in history from the University of Arkansas Little Rock. From there, Dr. Biggs worked as a store manager for both Wal-Mart and Hobby Lobby, which took him to several states including Illinois, Florida, Georgia, and Missouri.
Realizing that his calling was in education he left the corporate world and moved back to Missouri where he obtained his M.Ed. from Southwest Baptist University. Then, following in his father’s footsteps, he completed his Ed.D. with an emphasis in Educational Administration from the University of Arkansas Fayetteville.
Dr. Biggs has a passion for education and guiding students towards a bright and positive future. To this, he has spent the past 20 years in both Missouri and Colorado teaching middle and high school history and English. Then, accepting a position in administration, he began working as Dean of Students at the middle school level in Colorado Springs where his focus was on creating better and more effective student discipline models.
Feeling the draw towards a more community-oriented area, Dr. Biggs decided that BHSU and Spearfish would be the perfect place to begin a new and rewarding chapter. Dr. Biggs loves and appreciates the outdoors and enjoys such activities as hiking, camping, cycling, motorcycling, golf, disc golf, scuba diving, snowshoeing, fly fishing, and spending time with his wonderful wife and their dog.
