Gov. Dennis Daugaard has appointed Kay Schallenkamp, former president of Black Hills State University in Spearfish, to the South Dakota Board of Education. She will replace Julie Mathiesen, who resigned from the board last month.

Schallenkamp named to SD Board of Education

Schallenkamp, who retired from BHSU in 2014 after a four-decade career in higher education, had served as president of Emporia State University in Kansas. She also was provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and provost at Chadron State College in Nebraska.

Schallenkamp, a resident of Spearfish, earned degrees from Northern State University, the University of South Dakota and the University of Colorado. Kay is an active member of the Northern Hills - Spearfish Rotary Club.

Congratulations, Kay, and thank you for your continuing service to South Dakota.
